of over 9.4 million in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, making it also the third largest metropolitan area in
the United States. Chicago is located along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and is a major center of transportation, industry, politics, culture, finance, medicine and higher education. Chicago's monikers include the "Windy City," "Chi-Town,"
"Chi-City," the "Second City," and the "City of the Big Shoulders".
Chicago is the financial, business, and cultural capital of the Midwest. Founded in 1833 at the site of a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River System, it soon became a transportation hub of North America. By the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, it was one of the ten most influential world cities, a distinction it continues to hold.
Chicago is known as a powerhouse business center and a sophisticated city of friendly people. It is widely recognized for its daring approach to culture and the arts and its fierce passion for sports. Sports Teams & Events
There are currently thirteen metropolitan areas that have at least one team in each major sports league. Their principal cities are often said to have the "Grand Slam."
Chicago is one of those cities.
Chicago is the home to 16 professional sports teams. It is also
one of several U.S. cities to have teams from four major American
sports.The city has also been offered the official Chicago bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, which was chosen in April, 2007, as the United States bid for those games. Chicago also hosted the 1959 Pan American Games.
Chicago is one of three cities in the United States that has two Major
League Baseball teams, the other two being Los Angeles and New York.
The Chicago Cubs of the National League play at Wrigley Field, which is located in the north side neighborhood of Lakeview, commonly referred to as "Wrigleyville." The Cubs are the oldest team to play continuously in the same city since the formation of the National League in 1876.
The Chicago White Sox of the American League won the World
Series championship in 2005, their first since 1917. U.S. Cellular
Field, or "The Cell," is located on the city's south side. Built in 1990 and originally known as New Comiskey Park, it is located across the street from the original Comiskey Park. Like the Cubs, they are a founding team of their league, the American League, in 1900.
The Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association is a professional basketball team. One of the team's most well-known
players, Michael Jordan, led the Bulls to six NBA championships in eight
seasons in the 1990s. Other well known Bulls that helped them win the championships were Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen.
The new generation of Bulls, "The Baby Bulls", have made it to the playoffs the last three years. In 2007 they swept the Defendings champs, Miami Heat. The players on the team include Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, Ben Wallace, Andres Nocioni, P.J. Brown, Chris Duhon, Thabo Selfolosha, and Tyrus Thomas.
The Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League are the city's professional hockey team, and are an Original Six team. Some well-known players include: Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, and Denis Savard.

The Chicago Bears of the National Football League play at Soldier Field. The Bears history includes many NFL personalities,, including owner George Halas, players Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Jim McMahon, William "Refrigerator" Perry, Walter Payton, and coach Mike Ditka. In the 2006 season the Bears made it to the Super Bowl. They were led by coach Lovie Smith. Some of their players included Rex Grossman, Thomas Jones, Cedric Benson, Bernard Berrian, Olin Kreutz, Brian Urlacher, Nathan Vasher, Tommie Harris, and Robbie Gould.
Chicagoland Speedway is a speedway in Joliet, Illinois, southwest of
Chicago. It currently has a capacity of 75,000 people. Since its
inaugural season in 2001, the Chicagoland Speedway has became
an unexpected and significant draw for major NASCAR and IRL events, often selling out major races months in advance.
Chicagoland hosts the NASCAR/Nextel Cup Series race, USG Sheetrock 400, and the NASCAR/Busch Series Race, USG Durock 300, just once a year.
